Priya stands on the crowded deck of the SS Mauritania along with a hundred passengers who wave to friends and family on the pier. No one for her to wave to. Once she had reached the gangway, she sent Munshiji and Jamini away. The pier was growing crowded, coolies pushing, Jamini had stumbled twice. But now Priya bereft wishes she had not been so altruistic. Even the thought of her charming little cabin does not console her. She turns her back to the waving families and fixes her blurry gaze on the ship’s giant smokestacks. O Amit.

A white man touches her arm, startling her. She will have to get used to such behaviours, which Mrs Avery has warned her is normal in America. ‘I think someone is trying to get your attention.’

Below, Jamini dishevelled, gesturing pointing shouting Priya’s name. She came back! Around Priya, people unfurl white handkerchiefs, a hundred fluttering doves, a custom she had not known to prepare for. No matter. She waves the end of her sari like a banner. Good luck be well do not forget me. Her words are drowned in the blast of the ship’s horn. Smooth and powerful, the Mauritania picks up speed, making her way down the Hooghly to the limitless ocean.

Now sorrow falls away, now the heart quickens, now there is no looking back.

Bless me, Baba. I am beginning the greatest adventure of my life.
